What makes a high-quality essay?

A strong essay gives the reader a distinct idea, earns it with evidence and reasoning, stays concrete, and leaves behind something useful. This page makes that expectation visible and measures every published Raw Draft against the same benchmark.

Original idea

25 pts

The essay makes a distinct claim or reveals a useful connection that is more specific than a generic summary.

Evidence

20 pts

Claims are supported by sources, examples, observations, data, or clearly identified first-hand experience.

Reasoning

20 pts

The argument develops step by step, addresses consequences, and earns its conclusion.

Specificity

15 pts

Concrete interfaces, situations, numbers, comparisons, or mechanisms replace vague abstraction.

Usefulness

10 pts

The reader leaves with a question, model, decision, or method they can carry into their own work.

Editorial craft

10 pts

The title, opening, structure, pacing, and ending make the idea easy to follow and worth remembering.

How the score works

The score is a structured editorial signal, not a claim of objective literary truth. It uses visible properties of each published post, including its central claim, source list, argument structure, concrete examples, visual or comparative material, and editorial completeness. The benchmark is versioned so the method can improve without quietly changing past judgments.
